Something I just figured out . . .
Quick explanation: This post is a re-post of one I put in my own blog back on Dec. 12th, 2006. I'm choosing to share it here because it is relevant to the subject(s) being discussed. - Merlin

Every now and then, a light pops on inside my head. Today was one of those times.
Now, for those who haven't been following my blogging very closely, let's just say my background (religiously speaking) cuts a wide path through many different styles, ideas, and philosophies. I'm a person who can take seemingly unrelated bits of material, from unlikely sources, and put them together to make a picture that - once shared with others - makes people think "Duh! Why didn't I think of that?"
Sometimes I kick myself for not thinking of it sooner. This is one of those times.
Have you ever seen the movie "The Craft"? We own it on DVD - and watch it 2-3 times a year. One of the thematic elements of the story is a rendition of the "Law of Three-fold return" - whatever you send out, comes back to you times 3.
So, if you are casting magick for evil - three times as much evil will be done to you.
Well, it's not just a thematic element created for the story being told in the movie. This law is EVERYWHERE. And, I think I've figured out why it's a basic component of every religion I've ever studied (even if they don't call it magick).
There are two movies I've been watching that I would like to credit with inspiration on this point. "The Secret" http://www.thesecret.tv/home.html and "What the *bleep* do we know?" http://www.whatthebleep.com/
Those two movies tell us, separately and together, that our thoughts create our reality. What we focus our thoughts on is what the universe gives us back. When we focus our thoughts on evil, depression, lack, pain, and other unpleasing experiences - that is what we get! The same is true with magick. When someone is attempting to cast a spell, they are ritualistically focusing their thoughts, attention, emotion, and energy on a specific thing - a desired outcome. It's actually very deliberate, and as focused as a laser-guided drill! So, what do you get back? EXACTLY what you focused your attention on. Everything the spell caster did during the casting session was designed to focus attention, hone it to surgical precision, to cause exactly what they reap in the after-effects.
Based on this revelation, I'd say this to any spell-caster who reads my writing: cause only those effects you can comfortably handle receiving yourself. If you don't want it to happen to you, don't try to cause it to someone else. It can't be done!
